I am doing a master in informatics. Just completed a course on CRM. The professor taught nothing other than theory from journals and some of it are just plain common sense. Is that a common way to teach at post graduate level in uk? I have done a few courses in us and also in India at masters level and the approach there are case studies, group discussions, role plays, small projects, presentations and lot of industry folks taking classes. Wondering if my univeristy is unique?
If you are looking for a career in the industry, big data is one of the hottest areas. Cloud is also a hot topic, though a lot of it is about using technology that is already available, software reliability not so much - but software automation and decision making automation definitely hot
I suppose this is a straight forward question for all those who have successfully completed their dissertation. How do I know I should not spend any more time in literature search? And what I have collected is good enough. My dissertation is in the area of information economics and online community. Thanks for any guidance
Having worked for one of the top management consulting companies and leading a fairly significant practice myself, I am not sure if you really need to do a consulting MBA to get into them. Many of them in fact would prefer a good MBA degree from a good school. Any good Masters degree and good acads, will also be considered favorably.
Any advise on which are the good UK business schools for a MRes/PhD in management information systems (MIS) area? I am not looking at a school with a focus on Computing - but more on how enterprises use IT. I am keen to focus my research on the Mobility or Big Data technologies and their implications for company's IT? Thanks a lot for any guidance.
I am applying for a MRes programme in Management. I am in full time employment as a senior exec with a tech. company and will be doing this part time. I have done the usual thing of scanning the uni's website and reaching out to the profs. with exploratory emails (all done based on how to write such emails guides from the web !) and where appropriate with 2 full blown research proposals. But no response yet and not even an acknowledgement. Wondering what I should do differently. Also thinking if my age (40 years) and experience (17 years) is actually a disadvantage - too old to do a Master in Research? I am looking to do this research in Management area. Any guidance from the forum members will be greatly appreciated.
Dear dont_run_on_time
Thanks for the response. I did my mba 15 years ago and now in a full time executive role. I had quite good acads, but again these are now 15-20 years old. Will the unis consider my profile favourably for part time PhD still? Wont they push me to a dba programme which seems to be priced differently for working execs?
Secondly is it realistic to expect that there will be response to my phd app from the cold with no linkage or connect with academics? I may even struggle to get a reference from the unis after all these years? Thanks a lot agin for the insights.
I am currently considering doing a part time PhD in Mgmt/DBA. I am in a full time job and travel extensively - so a full time PhD is not possible. Part time PhD that require significant F2F interactions with the supervisor/participation in seminars is also a big challenge. After scanning through different websites etc. I have shortlisted a following unis - 1. DBA or PT PhD in Strathclyde 2. PT PhD in Surrey Biz. School 3. DBA in Heriot-Watt 4. DBA in Middlesex 5. DBA in Aston. Would really appreciate any inputs on how these part time PhD/DBA programmes are rated? Is it realistic to expect that these qualification will open the door to a career in academics? I am aware that DBA with Manchester Biz School or a Cranfld. or Durham are higher rated, but they are turning out to be quite expensive at £40,000 - £50,000 - so need to choose unis/programmes that I can afford. Thanks a lot for any inputs.
