I think what you need is Jabref [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jabref]. Its really light weight and has a lot more options than endnote and its FREE to download. You can export and import a wide range of bibliography databases and can be installed on windows and linux..
I think its too early to think about a research question. What you are expected to do at this stage is to read a lot around your topic and take note of important/interesting facts. Keeping a good workbook and a neat filing system would be an idea. Keeping regular fixed working hours would help you to reduce frustration - Dont ever think about your work outside these hours. Make sure that you enjoy your life and keep a clear receptive mind..
This department is one of the few places where a particular research is done and they have got more than 81 publications. The research team is really good and recently my masters supervisor told me it is the right department in a wrong university.. Also they offer full scholarship.
