I'm working on my PhD, but I'm wondering what I should do on the side to improve my job/research prospects once I complete. I want to gain transferable skills that will help me whether I decide to stay in academia or leave.

Any advice as to what practical things I could do?

Any teaching/mentoring undergraduate students available in your department? Some nice transferable skills there, not just teaching (teamwork, communication, assessment... etc)
