Postgraduate Tuition Confusion
H

What I have written was precisely the wording used in the email I received (I've cut out the rest of the email as it was not relevant). So yeah I assume that they mean the amount that is covered by the "'Graduate school home/EU 14/15'" bursary.

I am fairly certain that the tuition fees were already covered. Nevertheless I'll write an email to my main supervisor to check, just wanted to be certain that I haven't misunderstood the system.

Postgraduate Tuition Confusion
H

I am a bit confused in regards to a postgraduate scholarship that I've been awarded and I was hoping that some of you might be able to shed some light on the issue.

----------------------------------------------
Earlier this year I received a letter containing an offer of a scholarship from a Graduate school administrator, wherein it was stated that:

"The award will pay the home fees, and a maintenance allowance of 13863 pounds in 2014/15 "

----------------------------------------------

A couple of months later (Today), I received another somewhat similar letter from the admissions services, wherein it was stated that:

"This offer is subject to you obtaining financial support to cover tuition fees and any other expenses for the duration of your studies. The tuition fee amount shown below is for one academic year only and is payable by you or your sponsor. Further fees will be payable for a programme longer than one academic year

Tuition fee for first year: 3996 pounds

50% of the fee above must be paid before or at a formal registration or you must show approved financial sponsorship

you have been awarded the following bursary:
- Graduate school home/EU 14/15

The amount shown will be deducted from the first year tuition fee above. The award is subject to you self-funding the tuition fee. If you are sponsored this bursary may not be available. The bursary is subject to review should your fee status, start date or programme change"

------------------------------------------------

It was my understanding from the first letter that I received that the scholarship covered both the tuition fee and then an additional 13863 pounds in allowance. But from the second letter it seems that the 13863 pounds have to cover both the tuition and living cost.
Is this a mistake from the university or have I simply misunderstood the wording?

UK Visa System
H

I was wondering whether any of you were familiar with the UK visa system. I have applied for a PhD in the UK, and I am a Danish national (Denmark is a member of both the EU and EEA), do I require a visa to study in the UK for the duration of my PhD (3years).
I've had a look on the Internet, but I've found some conflicting statements.

English Language Requirements
H

Hello

I'm a non-native English speaker, who have applied for a PhD position at Hull University, UK. However, I am a bit in doubt about what evidence I need to provide in order to prove my English proficiency. In the application form both IELTS and TOEFL were listed separately, but on their homepage it seems that I only need one of the tests (http://www2.hull.ac.uk/student/admissions/international_applicants/english_language_requirements.aspx).

Is it normal to take only one of the tests or do you need both?

Hello Cathrine

I have found the document that you are intested in (Took ~30min). However, I believe its in French, but if you are really interested in getting the info, I guess that wouldn't stop you and Google translate in achieving that :) Its not like there is that much text, Pages 24-77 is just numbers.

Do you have an E-mail address so I can send it to you?

Confused about PhD Application Form
H

Hello and greetings from Denmark

I'm a bit confused about an application form for a particular PhD position (http://www2.hull.ac.uk/student/graduateschool/phdscholarships/fosaengineering-9.aspx), that I'm interested in applying for. It seems in the application form that I am supposed to present a "Research Proposal", which is what confuses me.
It is my understanding that a research proposal is something that you formulate if you want propose a project yourself, and not something you do to a project which already has a defined set of goals and basic methodology laid out (Such as the position I am referring to).

Am I looking at the wrong application form (http://www2.hull.ac.uk/student/PDF/PhDStudentship%20App%20form2014~FINAL.pdf) or am I supposed to formulate a research proposal for this particular position?

Sorry if this inquiry might be a bit stupid, but I have never encountered such an application form before and I were hoping that some of you might be able to help me out. I have already written to the university, but did only receive an auto-reply stating that it would take up to a week to reply :(

Best regards
Martin
