Masters in International Relations

When I did my MA in IR - I alos had no background
but I found that Jackson & Sorenson - Theories of IR was a great intro
It is actually an undergrad text

then Bayliss et al was fantastic - very easy to read with good further reading.

Burchill et al is a slightly more complex but great if youve read Jackson Sorenson & Bayliss first
They cover Critical Theory better than anyone

Best of Luck

PhD English - Write a Novel....
L

Greetings all

I hope this is not too off the wall....
I would greatly appreciate any feedback - but if it is off the wall
Feel free to shoot me down :(

I have a 2.1 Masters in International Politics.
However my background is several years living all over the world working in an industry that gave me
* significant direct contact with many celebs - Oprah, Eddie Murphy, Liam Neeson, Politicians, A list Business persons.
* it is also an industry where one is exposed to several vices - you name it

Thinking along the lines of a better packaged "Hotel Babylon" but a more subtle message,
Could I develop a novel as a PhD thesis?

Would a serious academic buy in to such a project.

I have the bones of a structure, chapters everything.
But I want to work on the complexity of its message and in addition market the concept appropriately.
In addition, I dont want this to fall into the category a hedonistic smut peddle or indeed a plastic celeb bio.

Am I insane?
Or if I structured the Project design appropriately, could I win the buy in of a serious Literature Academic

Any thoughts, productive or acerbic are equally welcome

Hi Looby Loo
Many thanks for that - a real help.

Your comments about PhD thesis proposal were helpful as you appear to have a strong grasp on what you wish to do.
I was looking at expanding on my masters thesis, however Im in process of structuring it.

Just also out of curiousity? if I went into an MLitt or an MPhil as the "first" year of my PhD
do you think I could get funding for each subsequent year?

Absolutely not
I am a Masters Student and use it extensively. It saves me significant time

I have not experienced many problems - if any
The ontly things - be careful with plural words it some times comes up as
"plural is" instead of "plurals" for example

The training as a drawback is over stated. Unless its accent sensitive?

I couldnt recommend it highly enough

IMPORTANT
When you buy
buy it through Amazon.co.uk - and you can get it cheap because you are a student or a teacher

Truely, It will save you so much time
Just make sure you read through it also

Phd Application: appropriate methods of contact

Hi all
I hope this is not too much of a simplistic query,
I am a current Masters Student. So far, a high 2.1 grade is likely.
Additionally, I have an area which I would like to form a proposal for Phd

What is the appropriate way to contact a potential supervisor?
Furthermore, how concrete does the proposal need to be prior to initiating contact?
(My MA Thesis proposal will form the bones of my PhD proposal also)
