Degree awarding and PhD start date clash

Very unlikely it would be a problem. Bring it up after you are awarded the PHD

Studentship Interview
R

Quote From sundogs:
Just a little update- I've been offered the studentship!
The interview was mainly about my current studies and about the details of my proposal. There was also a little on how I can contribute to postgraduate life in the department too.
So happy and very excited to be making this big move. I got a 2.1 for my undergraduate degree and thought/ was told that I had no chance securing PhD funding especially in the humanities.

Thanks to everybody who offered advice on this forum. :)

Congrats!

I got a 2.2 and managed to get a PhD (although I did get a Masters), which is quite rare!

Hah I've been unemployed since October, so I am sick of relaxing! But I will try and take advantage.

Excellent ideas thanks :)

Preparation for starting a PhD
R

Hey guys, I am delighted to have secured a PhD in which I will be starting in September.

What I want to know is if there are any tips for preparing for a PhD I can do this Summer?

Cheers

Is it possible for a university to withdraw a conditional PhD offer if you fail a module?
R

You have clearly met the condition. Don't worry.

Long commute for PhD, worth it?

OK thanks for your help guys :)

Long commute for PhD, worth it?

Quote From TreeofLife:
That's quite a normal commute in some areas of the UK. I did it whilst working for about 2 years, and then I got fed up and moved 5 minutes drive away from the office instead.

It's not ideal, but it's manageable, especially earlier on in the PhD when you will probably work shorter hours anyway. And if your PhD isn't lab-based, you will be able to work from home some days.

It's good to hear it is achievable. It's a science phd, which would normally mean in every weekday, but it involves a lot of informatics so perhaps working from home some days might be possible :)

Should I accept a fully funded PhD offer from a top university which I don't like?
R

Agreed, do not decline an offer if you have nothing concrete! (unless you don't want to do the project in the first place, that is).

Long commute for PhD, worth it?
R

I had an interview recently and i'll hear back soon about it. The problem is that it would be around 1h15m commute from where I will be living with my partner. Is it still worth it? It would be for at least a year (but probably 2) until my partner's situation changes.

What do you guys think? I'd also love to hear from anyone who is doing a similar thing currently. Cheers.

PhD interview (life sciences) - advice needed

Thanks for your help Jane, fingers crossed :)

I got a qualified only, as opposed to a Masters with Merit or a Masters with Distinction. You would say it was a C. Just missed out on the Merit.

I didn't allocate enough time to write the report/creation of figures. Obviously I know I can fix this with better organisation but I worry that they will think I should have fixed this in my undergrad.

PhD interview (life sciences) - advice needed

I have a PhD Interview coming up (life sciences). I have a 2.2 and a Masters. I normally would say that I have improved since my undergrad and my achievement of a Masters shows my determination to succeed and improve. However, while my first Masters project was a very good grade (high B), my second project was a poor grade (high D).

What I worry about is if I say I have improved since my undergrad, but then the interviewer points to my second project grade. What would I say?

Thanks
