I am! Headache is gone, thanks for asking! Hope you're having a productive day and enjoy yr tea with your mates!

I still have to write a discussion and do a last proofread on 3 chapters so lots to do. My 'end of the weekend' deadline is looking more like 'Monday' as time passes by oops.

Morning all!

I've got loads to do and a banging headache already (not for long thanks to ibuprofen ;-)) so off to do some work. I haven't finished my results yet so first I'll do my results, then discussion, hopefully will be done my lunchtime.

Supervisor forgot to do reference
S

Hi!

I'm so sorry to hear about what happened to you. Unfortunately I don't think there's anything you can do about the missed deadline apart from maybe calling and asking if they could make an exception.

I don't know if sups have to give us refs, to be honest, but I think it's pretty common practice. Saying that, I've had someone coming to me before and saying he'd only write 3 references because he was such a busy person he couldn't afford to keep spending time writing references for everyone indefinitely :-( but he was not a research sup and he was the exception to the rule really as most are quite happy to write a reference and help their supervisees progressing with their career.

It doesn't sound that your sup doesn' want to do it from what you're saying, he's not doing that out of spite either, 'you're just not his top priority' which suggests to me that either he's 1) too busy, 2) too disorganised, 3) too forgetful or 4) all of the above! If that's the case, it sounds like you're doing everything you can by chasing it up etc. If I were you, I'd probably start emailing maybe 2 weeks before the deadline and 'appreciate that he's very busy but...' stress how important this is to you and you're concerned that you might not even be considered if he doesn't manage to do it, etc. I also try to get a reply so I always ask questions e.g. 'have you done the reference yet? Did you get the info? Do you need any more info? or just unrelated stuff, how are things with...? Did you manage to do....(any work related stuff)?

I know these days everything is done electronically but, personally, I've 'happened to be around and thought I'd stop by to see how the reference is going and if they need any more info because I'm very excited and confident about this' as well. Some might see this as slightly extreme and maybe it is but I've had to get a report from someone who was extremely disorganised and forgetful and I know that he wouldn't have it done on time unless I'd done all these things - he'd missed quite a few deadlines for others before. It is a pain (excuse the language) but desperate times require desperate measures.

Good luck!

Hi! Could you please clarify what the individuals would be expected to do exactly? Thanks.

Money
S

I think this is a personal choice and will depend on 1) the interest you pay on your student loan (this will depend on when you got it) and how you prefer to manage your money. For example, some people don't like having debts of any kind so they'll be more inclined to pay it off.

Others 'don't mind' having debts so, in that case, it might be worth having a look at interest rates. The interest rates of student loans are generally very low (although this will depend on what year you got it) so, for some, it's best to place any 'extra' money on an ISA (if interest rates are higher than that of the student loan). This way, they'll still have their money to pay their student loan if they choose to do so but they'll be earning some interest ;-)

Obviously this wouldn't work if your student loan's interest is higher than that of an ISA, in that case I'd pay it off.

By the way, when you mentioned 'student debt' I assumed you meant student loan but the same principle could apply to any debts and this is just an idea, albeit a very good one if you ask me, but I'm VERY biased (up)

Hi Cindrella and Mlinsell! Welcome on board!

And congrats to those who managed their goals today (up)

I've not managed to do everything I needed :-( so tomorrow will be a hard day but nothing I can do now. I need some rest!

Thank you for the suggestion Kikuka but I'd alredy tried that and it only imported the first page :-( I think I'll just accept that there isn't a way around it and copy each page individually, it'll be a long process but it needs to be done.

epistemology help...again
S

Sneaks, I've only just seen this, so you might be alright, but as far as I know epistemology looks at validity of what we know, research, etc. I can probably dig out a definition and a ref if you need it too. Good luck!

Thanks Faerie and Dunnim, I'm starting to think that's the only way...

Skig - what version of word are you using?

I'm using 2010 but I also have accessed to an older version, maybe a 2003? You have any ideas of how to transfer a whole doc apart from page by page?

Horrible Viva Experience
S

Oh! It sounds like it was a bit of a disaster and you never really got a chance to properly defend it but... you did pass! It sounded a bit unfair to be honest, but as others said, you achieved your goal!

And thank you for sharing your experiences as well.

Congrats on passing your viva!

Hey Sneaks, I think the lack of sleep is not unusual considering the circumstances:-( I hope you're managing to do your work ok.

I'm a bit behind the schedule but still hopeful I can do everything I need to by the end of the weekend. I told sups I'd send then a final draft over the weekend but I think it might be Monday now. Oops!

Oh, well, so things I need to do today:
1) write remaining of my analysis and 2) discussion

Thank you and update from me
S

Congrats Star-shaped! I'm really happy you managed to secure a job :-)

I know what you mean Ady, I've done that on single documents too but this 50 page is only the first to go, I have more still to come!!

Faerie, I'm afraid I don't have Linux. i'm not very technical either but I assumed that, when merging 2 documents it'll virtually be 1+1, where they're 'glued' together? I need the document to become part of my thesis if that makes sense. So this 50 page document is part of my qual analysis, it contains some writing on it, hence why I had to scan it and I can't simply copy and paste the original transcript. I need to append it because paper trail is needed so that examiners can see where my results arose from.

In terms of the document, imagine that you attach a pdf to word, you can see the whole pdf document within the word document, you can also see your headers and footers incl page numbers on word. That's what I need the final product to be. It'd be the same if you were attaching a picture or anything else, but because I need to attach many pages, I'm wondering if there's a way of attaching more than one page at a time... time is precious right now!

That's a great idea Ady, thank you, but I need to add the pdf into the document as an object as it's one of my appendices.

And I'm very close!! I need this done by the end of the weekend! Although submission not till mid Oct.

I have a 50-page long PDF document that I need to add to my thesis and I just don't know how to do it.

I can attach a single page PDF at at time to word.
I can convert PDF to jpeg but they come out as single pages.
I can attach a single jpeg at a time to word.

But how on earth do you attach many PDF or jpeg pages without going back and forth inserting objects/pictures?
