Postgrad routes into teaching
C

Yes. I think that is it.
The fees are covered by a student loan and then come out of your salary.

The scheme looks great, but I think its a question of where you would be placed as well since (although they will take your preference into the account) you could end up all over England.
I have a family so should I look into a teaching carreer I would have to put up with that prejudice.

If you go with an ordinary teacher training at Universities, you could get up to 25K tax free bursary but will run a debt for fees. I think I would go with the later its better pay.

Here is says it depends on whether you have done Math and Physics or a different doctorate. If different, its aprox 16K for non-London based salary and 20K for inner London.

How do you keep up with the current research? Sciece related

Hi guys,
I am wondering how do you keep up with the current research. What kind of journals do you read? What are the best journals to keep up with various areas of science (apart from Nature).
Do you have any other ideas how to keep up?

Failed 1st year viva...I seriously need some advice
C

My ex supervisor told me that when he was PhD student (not too long ago at all), it was quite common for people to fail their 1st year viva for the first time. They went on to have great careers apparently.

when self-funding is the only way...
C

I think some people say that self-funding isnt a wise option but that is for natural sciences. There, after PhD, people will look at who provided your funding (as on other things of course). Wellcome Trust seems to be the holy grail, then BHF etc., then departmental awards etc.
But I dont think everybody looks at it that way anyway.
For humanities I believe it is an entirely different matter. And you are not too old at all!:)

studentship affect JSA
C

Yes, I believe it does. It doesnt affect tax credits as the income isnt taxable but housing benefits, JSA etc it will.

Visual Personality Test - will return the favour!

Done:) Cool cartoons:)

interview thank you letter
C

I wouldnt do it. If it was me receiving the letter I would think of it like someone is trying to gain an advantage, a bit pushy and tbh a bit bum licking...

Scholarship PhD Students! I need stories please?
C

I am science and I got offered 5 fully funded PhD's including two funded by BHF, one by Wellcome Trust and two facultly funded ones.
I am a first class student, with experience during my second year summer break (funded by a society) and full year placement in a research envinronment. I had some awards for my academic performance as well.
Saying that, plenty of my other applications got refused so my advice is to keep trying.

Deciding on PhD topic with too many interests?
C

Quote From RinaL:
Any chance of combining them? I too struggle most of my time with various interests. I am basically a "learnt" chemist who has a Bachelors degree in Biology (Virology) and did a Masters in Biomedical Analysis (Masters Thesis in Bioinformatics). And now I do my phD in the gap between the Aging and Dermatology field, have a collarboration with someone in cancer research and plan to do for my thesis some additional experiments with cutting-edge microscopy methods.:-D So yeah.. specialization? Um.. no!

I am fully aware that I will never be THE expert in one of those fields. But on the other hand I am very good in managing problems from different fields (every tried to get a chemist and a medical scientist to understand each other? ;-)). Perhaps I will never publish in Nature magazines and I doubt that I will ever have a career at the university but so far my various interests have brought me much joy in my research and a job offer from a nearby start up company.

In the end it depends on what you want to do afterwards with your degree? Comparing different fields could be a niche, too ;-).

Why do you think you will never be the expert?

The ex-poly curse
C

Thank you. I am over the moon. Will be hard logistically but I have to take up the offer:)

The ex-poly curse

Hi Socialplitik, thank you for your advice. I am sure they are very bright but I believe I am also:). Masters wouldn't be an option for me without a funding (family commitments). However, it doesnt matter now because I have been offered Wellcome Trust studentship at UCL! So yeah, I am good enough! It was hard but its possible. Just wanted to update in case if other people from ex-poly will be searching for a similar thing.
I am really happy because I don't think I could have got much better than that. So dont ever give up:)
