How to Get a PhD - Phillips & Pugh
D

Hi,

I bought it before I started my PhD. its an excelent read - well worth buying. I got a good deal off Amazon. Although you may not reference it often, its always good for those awkward moments when you just need to clarify exactly what a phd student should be doing on a day to day basis!

can i do phd with out masters in uk

Providing the marking systems are comparable (i.e both are marked to the same standard) Your 69% would equate to the highest 2:1 class - 70%+ is considered a first.

It is certainly possible - I have just started my PhD straight after completing my BSc in Biomedical.

ATPase Muscle FIbre Typing
D

Hi, As part of my studies I am going to be fibre typing muscle fibres using the ATPase technique. Just wondering whether anyone has experience of this (and an optimised method).

I have tried several methods so far with variable success, however, they are rather time consuming.

Thanks for any help,

Dan

Working times and earning extra money
D

Hi, not sure whether this applies, but I know that the NHS are always looking for locum staff - in many cases on an hourly basis. I worked as a tr. biomedical scientist in histology during my undergrad and they were keen to keep me on even for a few hours a week. P.S like the name - shocked that no-one has had that by now!

Experiences with industrial partners - high expectations?
D

I've yet to start mine (this Monday) but I have links with a large pharmaceutical firm who have given me set guidelines, time managment plans etc. I am quite happy with this in my situation as the area of my PhD is reliant on all their previous studies. However, I can understand your situation if all their input seems to be setting restraints on your research.

First Day Experiences
D

I've a feeling my first day could be a little strange. My supervisor is caught up in undergrad teaching so I'm just going to have to arrive and mill around for a day I think! I'll feel alot better when I see my work space, meet the other students etc. P.S I'm off to Asda for the Hob Nobs later!

First Day Experiences

I am due to start my first ever day this Monday so just wondering what 1st day experiences people have had. P.S I've got a new coffee cup for the occasion!

argh! is it possible to write 8,000 words in four days?
D

I would agree, perfectly "do-able" but difficult. I tend to write in spurts so I would maybe do that amount over 3 days but then very little for weeks.

I'm sure a good pot of coffee will aid things :-_

What to wear...

What to wear...

Ha ha, I would pay to meet some of these people. We had a Prof. who used to wear full arctic gear (including those carbon fibre walking aids) even when he was "trecking" through marks and spencer!!
