Beta Blockers

I was prescribed some to help with my migraines (made no difference). I did do a presentation during the time but not sure if I felt any different from usual, but then I don't really have any anxiety problems. Not really helpful but if nothing I suffered no ill side-effects.

Hopefully they will help you!

QUESTION ON BIOINFORMATICS
G

Whoever set you the question should have given you a list of some of the Bioinformatic websites available to analyse gene sequences. If you are that new to bioinformatics then I guess you don't know any. If you do know then the question is simple...in a way as all the information would be within the websites.

I'll give you BLAST http://blast.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/Blast.cgi there are more though and you should try searching for others.

Along with Pubmed you have a good starting point.

Hope this is of some use.

Who had heard about funding for 2010?
G

I've got high hopes every one of us will get something in the end. Hopefully my good news shall inspire everyone still waiting.

The interview went well and I got the funding, so come October I shall begin my study for a PhD, in a nice new lab too! :-)

Thanks everyone for the good luck wishes and interest.

That must be annoying not even being kept informed but at least with any luck you should find out in mid-July.

It's a bit annoying, I was phoned on Friday but sadly missed the call since I was out at work only to be left a message to phone back. By the time I did everyone was home for the weekend. I phoned back this morning to be told I had an appointment with the person who organises the funding allocations at 10. I live about 3 hours away and of course was unable to attend. The alternative was to have him phone me, he apparently has my number but no one could let me know when he would phone and so I am waiting...If they had emailed me or informed of this interview in the phone message I could have made it but nothing I can do.

Anyway if it gets me funding in the end I can't complain...but it's good to share my annoyance :p

My Plan B is not that exciting, I'll work for a year and apply again for PhDs, now that I have my grades I should have better luck with competitive funding (which is what I lost out on previously) or so I hope. Hopefully I will get a job connected to my degree and the experience along with my current grades will be very appealing.

Would be nice though if it all got nicely sorted in the next few weeks! So I shall keep my fingers crossed for all three of us. :-)

Hi Helena

I'm in the same boat, thought I had everything sorted back in February but sadly no. I'm waiting right now for a telephone interview (who knows if it will be today) for one lot of funding, should hear about another at the start of July if I am lucky, and one more in August.

I also hate all this waiting. Can't plan what I'm going to do until I find out about the funding and so feel as though I'm in limbo...Only positive thing is that I can hope to find out about everything by August which should give me time to get things started for Plan B. Not much of an upside but at least it's something.

Good luck with it all and hopefully knowing you aren't alone with the funding hunt should help :-)

There are pens and post-it notes! :-x

Rising Fees
G

Would the University not have to state at the start how much the following years would cost you? I don't really know how it would work but could you not ask? The previous poster seemed to think PhD fees would not increase but I have no idea if this is the case.

I would think it would make sense to either inform students how much the 1st, 2nd and 3rd year would cost or have it fixed at the usual price (£3,400 or what price it actually is) for each year and if the price increases only have this apply to new students. So although the price has increased you would still pay the old price...

This is an assumption and how I think it might work. The best thing to do would be to ask your university and if anyone says to you the price will not increase ask for it in writing. Hope this is of some use...probably not since it's opinion and not fact :-)

Accomodation
G

Private most certainly. My undergrad halls were awful, messy, noisey not my sort of thing. Would never go back even if it's Postgrad halls.

I like things to be just so, and dishes piled up for days or in the sink, or food being left out really stresses me. In private landlord or letting agency owned places people tend to treat them better, not always as it depends on who you live with. I have decided it is easier for me to live alone so that is the main reason I will not do halls again. :p

wellcome trust funding
G

As far as I am aware they give stipend for the full 4 years, whether it is in monthly installments or not I do not know.

Anyway this is the Wellcome Trust site for 4 year PhD Studentships in Biomedical Sciences:

Hope that helps.

Good luck!

It's weird and I can't do it for either. I move my pinky finger and my wedding finger moves for both hands. I can however move my wedding finger without moving my pinky finger for both hands. Damn my pinky finger! :p

Presentation

When you put it that way it does make sense....

Presentation
G

Other than an initial title slide I wouldn't bother with an overview and if you feel silly saying "this is what I'm going to talk about" then you should bother with it.

holidays?
G

If you get good weather and have time to enjoy it then it might not be so bad.

I'll be going to Spain I think it is in Sept...My mum needs someone to be a buffer between her and my gran so it should be fun :p

I pulled an all nighter, and now I feel terrible
G

Never pulled all nighters till my final year as an Undergrad, and only did this twice.  Reading over what I had written I see a few typos but the work is good. This makes me think it might have been a lot better if I hadn't rushed it in the final hours.  It is not my preference to do all nighters so I think I will try to avoid them in future.
