Hey DanB you're at Nottingham too? I tried 'V1' last week (a veggie restaurant opposite subway down the road from virgin megastores). Food was good put portions weren't! My absolute favourite restaurant is China One in Nottingham.. and they'll do a veggie version of anything you want.
I found mine on findaphd.com. Technically I was turned down for that position after panel interviews. However, in the course of that interview I explained my research interests and was told by one interviewer that he was expecting news from a funding body in the near future on just such a topic. When positive news came, he suggested I apply separately for that one and I did. We had already met so it was just a quick telephone interview with him and the second supervisor and I was offered it the next day.
I decided on what area I wanted to do, then approached the admissions tutor at the uni I was at for advice (she was one of my referees anyway). She suggested places to go that were working in that field and I applied to these and went through the interview process. I got two offers on the same day and chose Nottingham because the project was slightly more interesting.
I was looking at doing a PhD in the USA and in holland, france and italy. I didn't once just ask for them on here, I spoke to prospective supervisors. I decided to stay in england in the end, but still, I looked at other countries and had no troubles, so these people shoud be ok with PhDs in england
That is very good idea Matt. I found mine on jobs.ac.uk. However, I looked on this website as well. I emailed the supervisors saying that I was interested, gave them a bit of background, and went from there. Some invited me for interviews, some didn't. I got offered one after my second interview, however I attended another interview after that before I recieved the offer. I accepted a week later and here I am...
Just wondering, as there seem to be regulars here that are working on their PhD like me. Where did you find your PhD? I found mine by contacting a prof., working with him for a bit and then applied for a grant with him...and not by randomly asking people to find me a studentship... Maybe writing how we find our PhD might be of help to others...
What DanB said about his friend knocking back the herbal remedies really made me laugh!! Well I spoke to my supervisor and explained how stressed about it I was and things seem a lot better now. And I got paid my stipend today so I'm able to re-sit my test without a growing overdraft on my shoulders!! Thanks for advice guys, I will try those herbal things and keep at it!!
