I think it all depends on what you are going to do after you quit; for instance IT and interpersonal skills and the proven ability to prioritise are universally sought after whereas McD's couldn't care less if you can run a SDS-PAGE blindfolded. Keep it in perspective, don't go mad just to bulk up a CV.
Good luck in whatever you choose to do (up)
Not a very helpful question - confused about what exactly? Where to apply? What to apply for? What to wear? When to wear it? How to get funding? How to get there? Anyway, I'll stop teasing now..
Funding for a foreign national in a UK uni is scarce and has a LOT of competition. Bench fees are horrific. Unless otherwise stated, finding said funding is your task - consider it a part of the fun PhD process but begin by doing some background reading (ideally on this website).
Courses are offered via this website, just look harder at the "courses offered" bit. A lot od "doing a PhD" is down to you, only you can decide what's best for you and where to do it. Have fun!
Whay are you asking others if you should follow your dream? Go for it! You don't ask, you don't get! Best of luck!
Since this thread has degenerated into a revivalism of Jane Austen, may I be Mr Darcy?
They take a LONG time!
I would argue that a lack of BSc/MSc in a biological subject would not disqualify you but it would place you at a serious disadvantage: At the PhD level the expected knowledge is significantly greater than previous qualifications - I speak from experience: my degree was Biology but I moved into a (very) loosely related field. It's do-able, but tough
Given that I am working with a 250 x 150+ matrix per sample I'm using a Gaussian to plot the distribution of the data - make sure that the results are not horrendously out of sync with the mean. However, variability within the sample population, age of the machine, the fact I skipped breakfast this morning are all conspiring to ruin my data
I go home and pray I won't have to repeat it...
Ah Lara - I would so like to go with your idea! However, it's just c**p. I've fitted a Gaussian curve to test the data and about the only thing THAT line would be useful for would be as a kiddies water slide. However, in the interest of science, I will just make up some random new theory and muddy the waters of science for generations to come. Bu*$er it. Pantspantpants. Why oh why am I not allowed to unleash the awsome power of the English language manifesting as cussing on this website!
AARRGGHHH! I've had enough of this! There is nothing wrong with the protocol, there is nothing wrong with the measurement system (except it's older than my grandfather!) and there is nothing wrong with the method of analysing the data (because there is only one way to do it!) I've got months of work that looks ABSOLUTELY CR*P!!!! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!! Dammit, bloody GRRRRRRRRRRRR!
Calm. Must be calm. Anyone else want to join my in my holistic anti-"I hate this bloody PhD" therapy?
A dialect is regional intonation of and use of certain words not familiar elsewhere. Language just is! If in doubt - visit Yorkshire.
Not to mention mixing up the cliches
I strongly object to those forms. I find them highly offensive and intrusive. For starters, why should a less able candidate get the job simply in order to reflect the percieved ethnic mix of the population. To whit, we should arrest more white people since (I am lead to believe) the largest population in British prisons are of African origin.
Furthermore, whose business but your own is your religion or sexuality - they do not and should not enter into the workplace (certainly not your sexuality!)
Down with "Equal Opportunities" forms!!
Everyone has the productive-nonproductive-productive cycle; don't worry about it. When you're feeling like you're achieving nothing, work on a separate project that day and come back to your previous work the next day.
As to working it like a 9-5: this depends on the person. I work mine as close to this as possible, only taking work home if I am a) really enjoying it or b) I've got to get it done. Some people like to push themselves to the absolute limit. Do what suits your brain best.
I was wondering - where are all the hitlers, stalins and pol pots; surely we can't all be peace loving hippie chicks/dudes.
Unless the PhD process is yet another example of subversive government indoctrination designed to turn us all into malleable peons.
