Hi,
Just to tell you, (and I don't mind admitting), I haven't got any A-levels at all. I went back to Uni at 20 and got a BA (1st), have just completed my MA (anticipated 1st), and am hopefully starting a PhD in October.
As said previously, I really don't think you'll need to reference A-levels, especially as you've already got your degree.
Mine's a big fat 'No' too! AHRC was really a bit of a long shot, I have two more chances with an application to my own Uni (which I am hopeful for) and also to another Uni that has a funded place, so by hook or crook I do expect to be back on here by October! Fingers crossed!
Good luck to everybody who's still waiting, and good luck to Macboy, Mcneilis and Mookie in what you do next, things will work out, they have to!
Hi Hopeful 3
Just to let you know I definitely don't have any post today. That may well could be because we're in the same subject, I know in recent years they've been sent out according to subject and not necessarily all at once for all subjects.
The waiting goes on...
Surprisingly, I feel quite fed up of it now and not so much nervous, I would just like to get it over and done with regardless!
I am so sorry for all who don't get through. I haven't as yet had any news but am at work today so may expect an envelope when am home....Perhaps.
Truly feel for everybody who so far has not got through. Tiny, tiny, consolation, but at least we'll be put out of the misery of waiting.
Hi hopeful3
I've had mail delivered today but nothing (as usual!!!) from AHRC.
I have actually just found another Uni which is advertising a new phd funded position available in my subject, due to start in October.
It's a bit of a dilemma though, I'd far rather get the AHRC funding and go to my first-choice Uni, and also don't know how I'd be viewed considering I'm still potentially waiting for AHRC....
I do know of one application at my Uni which was masters level, but not sure about the rest.
What subject area is yours hopeful 3? Mine is English language / linguistics.
Mookie,
Thank you for all your work on that, it has tickled me! Pretty soon the days spent trawling the web searching for AHRC statistics (yes, I do know that you will have tried EVERY search possible to throw up anything on AHRC...I certainly have!) will soon be over....
Hopefully for the better!!!
Why, (!) do we hope to get the funding, only to get sucked in further....We must be mad!
Hi Mcneilis,
I agree those figures sound bad. However, it would be interesting to know to what extent the universities have been 'capped' in the open competition.
My understanding is that if you have been able to apply through this year's capped open competition, then statistically you stand more chance than last year of getting an award, due to the extent in which it has been capped.
Apparently an aim of the capping process is to increase the success rates, so 50 places may be good, if hypothetically say, the Uni's have been capped in total at 250 applications for them.
So, if anybody could get the 'capped' figures, that would make really interesting reading! And trust me, I've searched for them!!!
Oh sleepyhead. I am afraid that www.emeraldinsight.com already provides a very insightful journal to accounting, auditing and finance of (danish) cheese.
May I suggest for future 'cheese' related posts you specifiy a specific cheese variety, in order to make the path towards a cheese-based PhD as 'research-free' as possible?
Well done Terry Wogan 1980!! Well done all who have been lucky enough to hear in fact!
Phdnewbie- hopefully soon the waiting will be over! It's terrible, isn't it?!! I'm having proper imposter syndrome now and have convinced myself that I shouldn't have been put forward to AHRC in the first place, never mind dare think that I might actually get funding!!!
But we shall wait and see, as ever.....
Hi Hopeful
I had convinced myself that after all the waiting, I am resigned to not gettiing the AHRC funding and was looking forward to a letter just to put me out of my misery.
Until...got an email this afternoon saying that the letters are now ready to go out (!!!!!!) and could everyone check their postal address details so the letters would not go astray!!
That has now made me VERY nervous knowing that it's all decided! I genuinely don't hold out that much hope, don't think my area really ticks their boxes, but good luck to all those waiting! Apparantly we can now expecte a letter anytime from now up until August 21st.
Got any nails left?!
Hi Jem,
My first thought would be do you have any other committments, children etc? My opinion is that if you were free to concentrate solely on your PhD and your p/t job, then it should definitely be do-able, with planning! If however you have children etc then I think you may be pushing it!
Hi,
First of all apologies that I cannot answer your question at all, I have had nothing to do with ESRC.
But, I am waiting too for results from the AHRC open studentship doctoral competition and am completely fed up of waiting!! I have been told not to expect to hear anything until near the end of August but already am running for the post each day, just hoping that I may find out early!
Finally I have found somewhere else out there in the same position too, good luck!!
