I found that I worked better when I did my writing up of my thesis late at night, and sleeping in until midday. Since submitting my thesis I can't get my sleeping scheldule back onto a normal routine, ie waking up at around 7am and going to bed around 11pm. If anything my sleeping has gotten worse, I cant get to sleep until 3/4 in the morning, its approaching 5am now and i'm still awake. I know I won't wake up until about 2pm and I wake up feeling like I've wasted a whole day.
Any tips/suggestions on how I can get back to a normal sleeping schedule, one were I am awake at 8am? :-(
Hi Lostinoz.
I had replied to your post about the "Q" word. Here is why I decided to do My PhD;
1. Interest in the subject
2. My chosen career path required a PhD
3. The money is reasonable
4. Secure job for 3 years
5. I like learning.
I had thought about quitting (at the start of my final year) because points 1, 2 and 5 just didnt apply anymore and I didnt feel my work was good, I had other reasons also. What made me stay was;
1. Money
2. Job Security
3. I dont like to give up.
Well then I stayed and I motivated myself to finish. I then grew to love the subject I was studying. I was very upset the day I submitted my thesis. It's amazing what a year can do. I think my thesis is rubbish, but I finished on time :-)
Hi Lostinoz, I did use the quit word earlier in the year so I know how you are feeling. I did intend to quit, I told my supervisor I was thinking of quitting(I was really thinking about it) not just because of my actual PhD but also other things, I didn't think I was expected to do well anyway. She told me I shouldn't waste all the work I had done. I felt a little guilty because it's difficult to get into a PhD program never mind get full funding for it. Anyway, In the end I decided to stay, finish the thing and prove anyone that's ever doubted me wrong, i'm glad to say I submitted my thesis on time and I'm waiting for my viva.
I'm really saying is that if I can do it, so can you! Use that fact that you want to prove supervisor B wrong as motivation for finishing. :-)
Good Luck(up)
If you want to leave I think the universities prefer their students to leave at or before the end of their first year (before upgrade to PhD) because if universities have too many incomplete PhDs it would affect their funding. If you leave after the upgrade I dont think they can say you aren't capable otherwise they wouldn't have upgraded you in the first place.
I think its quite confusing, maybe universities should have guidlines on this or something. I mean, I'm registered as a FT student, but now i've submitted my thesis i'm not doing FT studying. I mean if we were meant to be studying FT until our viva, surely would this not mean we should be funded until the very end? At this point im not even part time. So confusing! I spoke to a friend and he told me to go speak to the university registry about it.

Generally to get funding you would need at least a 2.1. I'm pretty sure that you can get into a PhD with a 2.2 if you self fund(i'm not 100% sure). However you could apply for an MPhil, which basically is the first year PhD and then get upgraded to the PhD after a year, so you'll be a PhD student in your 2nd and 3rd years.

I dont know, I was a funded student so I might have to pay some fees if I go PT. I would give anything to have a job right now. I'm going to go into the university tomorrow and find out if I can. (up)
Thanks everyone (up)
