Help me decide where to do my PhD....LSE, Leeds or somewhere else?
P

... best bet for going into academia, just this morning it was rates 5th (or something) in Europe. But obviously don't rush into the decision, you have time to think about it.

Help me decide where to do my PhD....LSE, Leeds or somewhere else?

Any of those institutions would be great whatever you decide to do, I'm sure. It's easy enough to move if you decide you want to leave London after a few years, if that's what you want to do. I think LSE would be your..

If it was me, I would probably go with LSE. If you're looking to get into academia in humanities, I think there are more options 'down south'. But it's up to you, where do you want to live?

Very well done in all your offers! Any of the Unis you listed would obviously be excellent, so I don't think 'quality' wise it would really matter, although maybe LSE just pips it. It's about where you want to live ..

Is it Possible to Quit a PhD and to Start a New PhD?
P

I think there's no chance of transferring funding. If you did quit you would be in the same position as everybody else, you would just need to apply. Might look a bit bad if they see that you quit however.

At what point in your PhD did you know what you were really doing?
P

I didn't know properly at least until I scraped through my first upgrade, so probably not til early year 2. In year 1 I read, and wrote, some rubbish. But keep all that rubbish, might come in useful one day.

Potential postdoc versus potential lectureship
P

If you get offered the post doc take it, then apply for the lectureship. If you get offered that, resign the post doc and take the lectureship, if you decide that's what you still want to do. Good luck.

but is incorporated to the text. So for each analysis I have the classification table and the variables in the analysis table, that's all the data on SPSS really? Also, shouldn't you also report non-significant IVs?

Which outputs is it that you are thinking about moving to the appendices? We might have a different understanding of outputs? I have that table, but also the classification table. The r2 isn't a table to be fair...

... part of the thesis and you don't want reading as such. So any tables which you don't want marking as part of the thesis put in there. Hope that helps.

How much of the SPSS Output goes into the thesis appendices?
P

I'm using SPSS for log regression, and I'm not putting anything in my appendices. All the tables (classification, r2, variables) are going into my results chapter. The appendices are for things that aren't ...

Journal papers from PhD
P

I think you should rewrite it. However, I *think* you can cite yourself, but the other way around. That is, you would cite your article (published or forthcoming) in your thesis, rather than cite your thesis in your article.

Low 2.1, worth looking for PhD?
P

Sorry pm that is complete nonsense. A 2:1 classification is perfectly adequate for PhD study, hence it being the entry standard for most PhDs. The problem is if it is a 'scraped' 2:1 there'll be plenty with good 2:1s.

Who is really enjoying their PhD.
P

I'm enjoying mine (I'm a final year). Supervisors have been great, upgrades were tricky but useful, thesis coming together. I honestly don't know why everyone seems to have a meltdown. Maybe that's to come :D

Low 2.1, worth looking for PhD?
P

All you can do is try, a 2:1 is a 2:1. Although, TofL, when I applied for my PhD I had to send my transcripts in? If you have extenuating circs the Uni might take that into account.
