I can't be bothered to do my PhD.........
S

Just think it in this way. Sooner or Later, ONLY you have to complete the thesis. So might as well, you do it now, why delay it. Try to imagine of you clearing your Viva and no longer have to wake up and stare at the draft chapters. Break you workload into small portions and get it done. It is always better to do a bit every day than nothing for the day. Happy Researching, Cheers.

An MRes or nothing! What do you think of this?
S

Come on, cheer up Hydi. Just get your deserved MRes and leave that univ. I am sure you can always try in other univ in UK, which might allows you to spend another 2 years completing a PhD. As long as your PhD research topic is carry on from your Master’s research. It is know as a direct entry path. Remember nothing lasts forever, “This too will pass”. “The lowest ebb is the turn of the tide”. To see the Spring, really to see it, you must have lived through the Winter first. So don’t worry, for all the hard times you have gone thru, you will be having better times ahead. So, cheer up. “If you keep a green bough in your heart, the singing bird will come”. Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year my fellow researchers.

taking notes
S

Perhaps you can start by creating few folders. Title the folders as Chapter 1, 2, 3, … etc. Whenever you come across anything related to your chapter, all you need to do is, just dump it into the required Chapter. Hence, when you start to work on the chapter, you could easily refer to it. Additionally, you can just create a blank chapter and save it into each Chapter folder. Then, whenever you come across any good phrases or statement that you think relevant to one of your chapter, just cut and paste to your blank chapter. Please don't forget to add full reference on whatever you are copying before saving onto your blank Chapter. Hopefully, it works for you. Cheers, Happy researching.

Having trouble structuring my last chapter!
S

Just sharing on how I am doing (reliability eng.), perhaps it might work for you too. Cut and paste abstracts from all your chapters, then expand it diligently emphasizing on research contribution. Do include research limitation and future work. If possible, add on some practical aspects that can be achieved from your research. I guess that there is no harm in asking supervisors, since they are here to help us. Ideally, just have a look on your dept’s recent ‘good’ thesis conclusion chapters. Hopefully that helps. Cheers, happy researching.;-)

Belle de Jour is a Post doc !?!
S

My fellow researchers, It’s her fate, what to do. Fate can make a pauper to be wealthy men/women and vice versa as well.
After all we are merely actors/actress on this world stage.
Happy researching, cheers.

Does it refelct badly on your supervisor if you quit PhD?
S

Frankly, no supervisor would like to stain their CV. Certainly, it will look bad on the whole team of supervisors. In fact, it will become another typical gossip within academician in that university or even up to the research communities in that field. Worst still, they have to work hard to ensure at least the next research student get his/her doctorate. Doing research involves teamwork. When we, researchers, passed our viva, it is not only our own hard work, effort… etc, but includes reasonable amount of effort from supervisors too. Having said that, come on, it is not worth it to quit. Getting PhD is not all about brain but it is heavily towards researcher's effort. If you happen to get stuck with brainy part, it is where the supervisor should guide you. Happy researching, cheers.

Hopefully, your problem should be solved.

self-funding-snobbery?
S

Nothing is fair when comes to love and war. Similarly, when comes to research, it all falls back on from which perspective you view at. If you view it from the angle of half empty portion of an hour glass, you will be grumpy and thinks in the similar manner that guy was saying. If you happen to view the half filled portion of the same hour glass and think maturely enough, “walla”, you will get to realize that even those snobby rich kids do genuinely have something to deliver which entitles them a PhD. By the way, I am not one of those rich kids yea, I am struggling with teaching load, research, etc.

Bad supervision meeting
S

Don’t worry, take it easy. It is all part of being researcher, dear. Just amend ur draft as what is required, u shd be fine. Frankly every written chapter is indeed hard work of many draft copies. Once u get ur doc, kindly tell that supervisor of yours whom laughed at you, ‘’U shd feel ashamed of urself’’ Any supervisor who laughs at research student’s work frankly aren’t qualified to be one. Retaining motivation of the research student is part of supervisor’s obligation. How could he/she do that by laughing off.
Cheers;-)

End of road with supervisors
S

Take it easy. I have been there and I know how it felt like. Frankly, I was not bothered with any of their remarks because I know well where I stand, however, what you went through is just a part and parcel of researcher’s life. It makes you better. Easier said than to practice and believe it, I know. Imagine researching as a half full glass of …. If the supervisor sees the half full part, he/she will give you good comments. If he/she ends up only staring at half empty portion of the glass, then hard luck mate, lousy comments you shall get. “It all lies in the perspective of the viewer’’. Don’t worry it’s just a phase of researching that you are passing thru. It won’t lasts forever. Be humble and have a lot of patient and spend more time reading ‘good’ articles in your domain. Hopefully and I am sure you will be better off start with new lot of supervisors. Happy researching, Cheers.;-)

Phd Writing Advices and Phrases
S

Spend more time in literature review. By that alone without you even realising it, you will happens to end up writing with similar trends. Science expects facts and not beautiful wish washy thoughts to be included in your writings. PhD deals with originality, thus kindly don't bother to cut and paste, not worth it. Happy researching.
Cheers ;-)

how to gain focus?
S

2 b frankly, I wonder how people survive 6 years doing this research. I am left with a year and half to go, already felt half dead. I am suffocating. Good thing is I managed to squeeze 2 months break, hehehe;)). Should be back to strive like mad… to complete my research on time. Good luck 2 all of us.

Submitting abstract for conference
S

Well, upon submitting your abstract, the best is to forget about it. It takes time for the committee to check and reply. Thus, carry on with your research and concentrate on other works than worrying on whether your abstract have been accepted. If accepted, that is fine, if not, be happy too and try to spend more time in selecting correct conference or journal that more relates to your research. Perhaps you can always check with them like you did when about a month prior to the conference date. Merry X’mas and have a successful 2009 New Year research folks. Cheers.
