I'm suprised by all these posts, I have socialised with lecturers whilst with my partner, and I never noticed any problems. Yes they are obviously older than me, and downing copious amounts of alcohol is not their idea of fun, but I felt that there is a nice mix of people around. The world would be very boring if everyone liked the same things and all shared the same interest.
These lecturers were very interested in my girlfriend and what she does for a living, and she was made to feel very welcome. And the lecturers partners were the same with me.
Take on board the advice about references being a formality, I can't imagine that the other applicants are getting references like- 'this bloke will change the world and win a nobel prize'.
The thing that universities will be most interested in is your qualifications, experience and personal statement. Then they will judge you at interview.
Remember, most references are short and almost pointless, so this isn't just exclusive to you, everyones references are like this, so you are not at a disadvantage
I just don't like journalists.
They are all so selfish and don't care about the misery they impose as long as they get their story.
Millavi, accept that the subject is a bit touchy, and people don't like accepting defeat or admitting to personnal problems, so I really think you should drop this subject and find something a bit more sympathetic.
There are many people on this forum with worries and a lot of stress, and they will certainly not want to read a whole thread about 'failure'
