Do reviews, book chapters etc help in the final viva

At the end of the day, examiners are examining you on your thesis, not your papers etc. No need to worry about publications.

Lost motivation - if found please return...
V

Breaking the work in small chunks and setting yourself a goal for a day to do at least one small chunk of writing usually works for me. Maybe could for you as well? Also thinking about all nice things you will do after your finish your PhD:)

SPSS question. Oh man, they want more words in the title, so here.....!!!
V

Bying SPSS from distributors is enourmosly expensive, even for a student version. The cheapest way is to buy through university a licence for a year and renew it every year, as people said it here.

One more EndNote question. (H, are you around today?)

shani: thanx, that is very useful to know:)

the easiest way is when writing ( in unformat citation mode) put a comma after the reference number, like this:

{Wilson, 2000 #159, p.404}

then when you will format citations it will appear like this (Wilson, 2000, p.404)

pregnant - can they sack me

congratulations! The most likely thing is that you might have (or might have be asked to have) a gap year. But ask them.

Ageism and applying for academic positions
V

BTW, Orian, it is enough for a paper to be accepted for publication to list in on your CV, even if it is not published yet, so, it might take less time you think.

My friend, btw, in age of 37, with 2 only publications was looking for a lecturers positions almost 2 years and made around 14 applications before he got a job. So, keep trying!

Ageism and applying for academic positions
V

Well, if they offered a job to someone who has published less than you, who has lees experience in teaching than you but is younger than you than it would quite easy to prove ageism.

Orian, competition for lecturing jobs, especially permanents ones, not hourly paid, currently is very, very taugh, apart from some fields. It is almost impossible to get a lecturers place in a good university without publications, unfortunately. I assume, that competition isnt less taugh for postdocs, especially in good places. I hope that journals will accept your papers soon and things will get better:)

Worried about supervisor
V

Basically it is completely up to you when and what you complete, except for deadlines set by the deparment (e.g. for 1st year report). Your supervisor may or may not set you goals and deadlines but it is not definely her job. Regarding notes- my supervisor never ever has made any notes in supervisions. Why should he?
I would suggest- be proactive-decide what you want to do, by when, ask actively feedback from your supervisor.

social norms in business - anyone know where i can get such literature?
V

I didnt mean a particular encyclopedia but there is International Ecyclopedia of Social and Behavioral sciences and some others...

social norms in business - anyone know where i can get such literature?
V

It might be helpful first to find exact definition of social norms in some kind of Encyclopedia of SOcial sciences, it will also give you main authors and their works. Then after reading them you might be able to do more precise search.

References and Bibliography
V

I agree that Bibliography does not make sense for a PhD. If I saw an add in a women's magazine that gave me some idea for my PhD, then I have to reference it in Bibliography:)

Lecturership without Post-Doc?
V

well, I heard that some people who have been Professors in teaching universities have accepted positions of Lectures and Seniour Lecturers in Oxbridge(with a salary of Lecturer, of course)just to be there. So, it supports your hypothesis. And it means, as an academic you have to choose between fame and money:)

Lecturership without Post-Doc?
V

becoming a Lecture in the top unversities without postdoc is mission impossible. But in some 'teaching-orientated', less research active universities is more than possible. I know one who is still doing a PhD and already working as a seniour lecturer.
