Hi Everyone,
I'm doing a PhD in French studies and continually quote in French although of course I'm writing in English. My MS word (2007 Vista) spellcheck doesn't pick up the languages very well, for example it defaults to English in the French sections and vice-versa, so the whole document is seen as wrong, and doesn't end up being spell checked at all! Even worse, it automatically changes words which are similar in both languages, for example 'limites' will be anglicised. My hard copies come back with my supervisors correcting the French, which is pretty embarrassing!
I thought this must be a common problem so wondered how other people approach using more than one language in Word? There doesn't seem to be much help on the internet, aside from changing default language settings, which I have done.
All suggestions gratefully received.
This is a particularly reassuring thread. I get so cross with myself at how lazy and undisciplined I can be, especially after having received funding and switching to full time study. I'm not going to offer tips, as we've all got this far knowing how things should be done, but thanks to the person who started this with their candid confession (i could have written it myself).
Sorry to hear that fingerscrossed- do you have any way of going ahead or are you going to take a year out? I was unlucky with the AHRC last year and I've just self-funded my way through my first PhD year. I'm still alive, although it has been touch and go!
congratulations Hannah! I have also had good news this morning from panel 5. I'm over the moon. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this forum, it has provided me with so much support- and distraction- during an agonising wait. Best of luck to everyone.
I hope you poked them in the eye :-) Well that's one positive and one negative. All these bare threads to hang on- it's ridiculous. I can't concentrate on anything! Fingers doubly crossed for tomorrow...
Thanks to panel 5 people, it's reassuring to know. I spoke to two people today in my department also waiting to hear. To fingerscrossed- maybe you could use the envelope postmark to prove when you received your letter? If you have any problems that is, but I'm sure you'll be fine. It's definitely 21 days to accept.
Yay, happy to hear i'm not alone. I remember reading somewhere that 5 september is the cut-off point, if you haven't heard by then you're supposed to phone (what happens then i've no idea). So in reality, that's another week...
Morning all, another no-post day for me. Anyone out there heard/ still waiting to hear from Panel 5...?
Wow soarus that's amazing, really well done! Now quick get over to the other forums and spread the good news!! :-)
Nothing today, I'm beginning to scare the postman. I'm Panel 5 too.
hi elusive- i'm in the same position as my PR form wasn't sent last year although that was my fault, not the uni. However, the ahrc, bless them, hadn't told me my application was deemed ineligible so i was sat there waiting, checking the post for nothing! I think there were a few of us who that had happened to, which is why they changed the DR/PR forms process this year so please don't worry if you're reading this. I keep thinking that this year can only be an improvement in that at least my form's been read by someone, somewhere!
Nothing for me today. I totally sympathise with those of you trying to write MA/MPhil dissertations. I'm supposed to be finishing a chapter which I haven't started, as I'm afraid of getting really into it and then having to abandon the PhD altogether. But at least I can ask for an extension- my poor supervisors should be used to that by now! I'm slightly afraid of all this info resulting from the telephone calls, it sounds like total chaos in the AHRC office. Where is it located again? maybe we should march on it and demand our letters...
Dear all, it's a relief to have found some people to wait with as I'm also going round the bend. I've just done one year without funding, and if I'm not lucky this time I'll have to call it a day, it's not impossible but it's quite frustrating to fit it in around paid work. To make it worse, I seem to get one thick envelope delivered every day - full of junk! best of luck to everyone- it could come tomorrow :)
