so you managed to get JSA? did you have to go to an interview for crap jobs?
My plan to avoid that is to make out that I am an interlectual genious with the personality and social skills of a newt. That way my CV will look academically great what with degrees up the ying-yang (compared to their regulars) but not able to make a cup of tea or hold civil conversation. I should manage it fine seeing that I am a theoretical biologist who works with numbers and not organisms.
The nly prob is if they read this as he must be good at data entry if he can use computers, but I will just talk about C++ and S as opposed to excel and access.
old thread I know.
but has anyone any further luck in qualifying for JSA since 2006.
I have a few months funding left then about 6 months for write up, and was wondering how all funded this write-up period. Getting a PT job would be fine, but I know that if i did this i would never submit. I teach undergrads when I can, but the summer term is all about exams and dissertations etc, adn then the summer no teaching to be had, but come October I will not be elligible to teach as I will "not be
registered with the uni" (part of the problem of council tax exemption also - not registered therefore cant get exemption).
all opinions welcomed

Anyways
2 months: 1000 word intro
9 months: a FIRST year report (yes first year report after just 3/4 year) 3000 word
12 months: 10000 dissertation, Viva, poster, symposium presentation
Throughout a mass of non-phd related transferable skills courses
The above all go on file for your phd examinations
I thought PhD was always about doing what you wanted that interested you as and when you want to.
On top of that you have to the normal stuff for your supervisor eg. lit reviews, progress reports etc. Cant wait to do my research as opposed to ticking boxes
Dear All
Just wanted to have a straw poll on how many of you had to do a report/dissertation and /or Viva at the end of your first year of your PhDs.
Just asking cos im at the end of my first year and here at Imperial we have to do what is known as an MPhil/PhD transfer (ie if you pass you can continue onto the 2nd yr, if you fail you get an MPhil by default).
Reason I ask is that mates of mine at ALL other unis have no formal transfer requirements, just that your supervisor keeps tabs and when I talk about writing my transfer they have absolutely no concept of what I am doing. I just think its a wee bit unfair as who has enough to write anything of quality at the end of a 1st yr. Secondly its wrong that if you cant cut the mustard, you get an MPhil.
whoops it was danb with the rocky horror suggestion, Ann was just laughing along.
Ann -1 credit for tricking me by inhibiting my ability to read due to the complex structure of your post and some form of mind numbing telapathy.
DanB a firm hand shake and a manly strong pat on the back. Well played sir, good innings. (Dont want ppl getting the wrong idea of me with all this talk of rocky horror)
Ann. Rocky horror sounds like a sweet idea. I could have a matching name badge Dr. Frank-N-Furter. Thing is its a plant pathology conference and in my experience these guys have very little sense of humour, so it may just be lost on them.
Keep your answers coming in on backs of (electronic) postcodes, and a lucky inner will be drawn out at random before I go.
cheers for the replies. I thought as much.
Furthermore, I have no fashion sense. whwat colour shirts and trousers would be best?
Also Shoes, no body mentioned shoes. Is it smart black jobs, or will a pair of comfortable mochasins suffice.
Ahhhh. I know what im saying in the presentation, but all I can thinking about is making a fool of myself and saying the wrong thing, or looking the wrong way.
Pathetic I know.
Hi all.
Im off to my first conference to present a poster. Im a bit scared not just for what im presenting and meeting leading academic, but what do I wear.
I do not want to go in jeans and T-Shirt (cus Ill stand out like a student and not look the part), but dont want to go in a suit and look really out of place.
What should a male PhD student wear at conference to not look out of place and also not to stand out.
Right I am sure that many of you know this website and its comics www.phdcomics.com. According to the site he does tours, and I would like to know if a tour was organised in the UK would you go. (I would like to know because I am willing to try and spam Postgrad associations etc, to get him over here-basically so I can acctually ignore doing my PhD).
Cheers
