Do people really work this much?
F

I should really admire you all here. As I have never had constantly 3 productive hours given I have been trying very hard. For me, writing is the most difficult task so whenever I start writing. I become extremely exhausted after 1 hour. It also takes me 10 hours on study desk whether at home or in office. I don't chat with any body or surf the internet. Many times when I got stuck, the only thing I can do is to calm down and try to find out something. I am not sure with you all, but for me writing a thesis is unknown. I mean, it is not always, I have an idea to write down in my PhD time. I would have to spend a day to find out an idea to write. That's why I am doing very slowly

hi Keenbean
I think this is a bit mad what your supervisor is expecting of you, and I would definitely learn to say no asap..most of the postdocs I've spoken to have said that it's more stressful than a PhD and much more work, so just imagine how much your sup would expect you to do if you did get a postdoc with her at the end...I've had to tell my supervisors no in the past, and it's clear some of them didn't like it one little bit, but I've gained respect for being able to stand up for myself.  Obviously however, if you do want to do it all and are ok with putting in all the time required then fair enough, but personally I'd rather do 5 things well than 10 things half as good...but maybe that's just me! :-)

Dear all,

I'm not sure my post is right here. So I do apologise if it is not right. But I have an issue with my supervisor. My supervisor is quite slack. He spends very limited time with me. I am very alone in my journey. Sometimes, I got stuck and asked for helps but he did not have time. He asked one of his assistants to work with me. But I don't like it as the assistant does not really take responsibility to work with me. The assistant does not really get involved in my project and forgot my topic all the times we met. Sometimes, my supervisor suddenly remembers me, he asked me to send a piece of writing to him. He read and gave me some comments. These comments are more dealing with grammar rather than ideas.

Now, the deadline to submit my thesis getting close. He is also worried that I cannot finish in time. He pushed me very hard by asking me to send a page writing everyday. For the first week, he really spent his time on my writing. But then, everything seems go back. He does not give me any more comments.

I do not know who I should talk to as my supervisor is the boss of all other people in this school. Just trying myself to finish and go home.

:((. Thanks for giving me a chance to talk., Any advice for me is greatly appreciated.

When to get married?
F

Hi Button,

It is an interesting question, for me too as I am still single. :)). In my view, when getting married really depends on you and your partner. If he/she understands how hard it would be after marriage especially with a person doing PhD during this time. If your partner is 'ready' to help and share hardships with you in your PhD journey, it is great to get married in the first year of your PhD. As it means your difficulties will be shared. If your marriage would make you happier thereby you have more energy to study, then marriage is a very good choice. In our PhD time, there are lots of time, we are very lonely and tired. There are lots of moments, we just want to give up everything. At these times, we need someone understands and be willing to share with us. By contrast, if marriage makes you more tired beacause of responsbility and housework, then you should delay it.

My thinking is, it is better to talk with your partner whether he/she is ready to endure PhD journey with you. Does he/she commit to such a long and an eventful path with you? Talk clearly your thinking, plans and what you expect from him/her. Then go to the final decision.

Good luck and have a sound choice (up)

Hi friend,

Thanks for your advice. It is necessary to read and sometimes read heaps of books and articles. But do you think it sounds too general. It is like 'keep reading and writing'. I open this thread in a hope that we could describe our experiences as 'detail' as possible. I have learnt some experiences from some PhD colleagues too such as keep reading and writing as I just cited, and forming a group and helping each other to do peer review, presentation, ... But there maybe lots of tips that we could share and help each others to improve our writing and also research.

However, I greatly appreciate your sharing and advice. Have a good weekend and keep sharing our tips

Dear all,

Maybe many of you are from nations where English is not your first language. Then, you would have the same difficulty in writing research paper or thesis in English like me. I'd like you both English native students and non-English native students sharing experiences on how to write research paper and thesis. Advices for improving writing quality and speed are greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much ,-)
