Quick & Really Silly Question
Avatar for ginga

I wouldn't mention that you haven't 'boned-up' on anything; you have plenty of time to get to grips with your project over the coming months. You will soon end up knowing more about it than your supervisor anyway. Just be cool about the whole thing and be yourself. Good luck!

Word 2007 - Header Help!
Avatar for ginga

Hi!

I was wondering if anyone knows how to apply different section headers for my thesis. I can put a single heading in, but it applies it to the whole of the document. I need to know how to put different headers for each chapter - can anyone help please? I am using Microsoft Word 2007. Cheers, Ginga x

submitting the same article to two journals at the same time...
Avatar for ginga

It's a no-no really. If they both get accepted and subsequently published, you are bound to be found out. You can always approach another journal if it is rejected by the first. If I were you, I would withdraw one asap.

very easy stats / SPSS question

Non parametric = Mann-Whitney U test, parametric = student's t test. You will need to decide which fits your study. Ginga xx

Writing 25,000 words in 8 days. Possible?
Avatar for ginga

Personally, I can't do more than about 1000 words per day of PhD quality.  I know others that can do a lot more, so I suppose it could be possible depending on the individual. I always find that other things get in the way, like supervisor meetings and Cash In The Attic/Homes Under The Hammer, etc.  Best wishes though!

Job offer before submission - can I do it?

Thanks everyone, I appreciate your support. I think I can go for it, and I will talk to my supervisor as soon as possible. Nothing ventured, nothing gained! Best wishes, Ginga xx

Job offer before submission - can I do it?
Avatar for ginga

I have been offered NHS PgDip training in Radiotherapy and Oncology in Practice, which will qualify me as a radiotherapist - something I have wanted to do for a long time. There is a critical skill shortage for this profession in the UK, so it should lead to a job at the end, especially if I have a PhD as well. Trouble is, the training starts in September this year and I am hoping to submit my PhD thesis early next year (January 2010 is my 33 month point). I am sure most of my practical work will be done by September (no consumable money left anyway), but my concern is, can I finish writing up and start the radiotherapy training? I am already 200 pages into the thesis (fully referenced and formatted), so could get the bulk of it done prior to the start of the course if I dig deep over the summer. I don't really want a deferral, as I am getting on a bit at 37 years old. Another problem is that I haven't told my oncologist supervisor about the offer yet, although he is aware that I applied, and I will need a reference from him very soon. Any advice please? Cheers, Ginga x :-)

Upgrade viva - humiliating disaster?
Avatar for ginga

That's just so awful Mothlene - probably the worst post I ever read regarding a transfer viva.  Your examiner did indeed act in an unprofessional manner, and you surely have a cause for redress on account of his unacceptable behaviour which may even constitute bullying. I am not surprised you showed your emotions; I mean, who wouldn't?  In our line of research, a transfer report is a short account (~6000 words) of what you have done in your first year, and what you intend to do for the rest of your project. The viva itself is very informal, and lasts for about 1-2 hours.  In my viva, the examiners did do a lot of the talking, but I just let 'em get on with it as I nodded my head enthusiastically. There were no problems, and everyone was happy with it.  The nasty experience you have shared with us sounds more like a personal attack on your research rather than on your progress or abilities to me. Shame on him, not on you!:-s

How important is the performance in the VIVA

Good luck Jiou, I am sure you will be fine in your viva - just do your best. Please let us know how you get on. Best wishes.(up)

Tackling the resubmission
Avatar for ginga

That must be such a shock, I really feel for you. How much work does correcting your thesis actually involve?  You will just have to make the alterations as per the examiners' instructions and resubmit it. I know that will be even more hard work, but please try and persevere; just grit your teeth and do your best to get it done.  Best of luck!
