I have just sent a draft of my first paper to my supervisor and am awaiting feedback. I agree that trying to write something that is consice and to the point is very difficult. I have a very good supervisor who has a lot of experiance in publishing and what is expected.
I too have a third class degree and very much gave up the hope of going further. I had been working in the food industry for about seven years when I have the change to do a part time MSc which I have now passed and am currently putting a proposal together for a PhD.
The course tutors were initially worried about my academic qualification but the industrial experiance is what got me on the course.
On some courses you can start off doing a diploma and then if they think you are able carry on with the project part of the MSc. If you don't have a good qualification then funding can be a major problem! Only probelm is you could still only end up with the diploma.
I am just putting together my proposal for a PhD after compleating my MSc while working full time. The MSc has taken three years and the PhD will be between 5-7 yrs while working full time.
This will work for me as the company is helping to fund most of the costs while providing time for practicals which are based on what I am working with. The proposal is quite detailed with several small projects and timescales for compleation. I know that this is going to be hard work and it is the planning that will allow me to do the PhD.
I am dyslexic and have just compleated a masters and am drumming up funding for a PhD, The best advice that I have is get anyone and everyone to check your work. My wife is a teacher and is very understanding when looking through my work for errors. Tutors and friends are also a good source of addition help and very understanding.
