Time to submit corrections
P

Hi all,

I passed my VIVA a month ago with minor corrections. Is there somehow a time limit until when the
final version of the thesis has to be submitted. On another note, I started my PhD just less then 4 years
ago, is there also some kind of deadline that the PhD has to be completely be finished within 4 years?

Many thanks for any feedback!

Viva - feeling relaxed!?!
P

Same feeling, my VIVA is in exactly one week and I have the "I cant be bothered attitude"... Probably I am a bit
too relaxed, have to get my act together. I guess I will also hand in the corrections at the beginning so that
they see that I had a look at it between submission and viva.

VIVA HELP!
P

Quote From Chuff:

Patrick,  could i ask a practical question about a comment you made - do you mean conferences as publication or journals ?  i'm unclear what people mean and i guess am thinking of my own time management,  target conferences or journals

That were just conferences, not sure what is better to target though.

VIVA HELP!
P

My Viva is in around 10 days, the more I read the thesis the worse it gets... have discovered at least 10-15 spelling mistakes and
I am sure that the examiners will find some more since I am not a native speaker. The only hope that keeps me going is that I have
4 publications out of my PhD, so hopefully this will also be acklowedged to some extent.

Good luck with your preparation efforts, it all will be over soon ;)

VIVA HELP!
P

I am just reading through my thesis, and the more often I read through it the more mistakes I discover....
I expected to have some spelling mistakes bust until now I have surely found around 10 plus I got 2 parameters
wrong (damn you copy and past :)). How does this work for the VIVA. Do I say at the beginning that I have
a copy with me where I also found some mistakes since I submitted the thesis and I wanna correct them?

Cheers

Viva preparation advice
P

Indeed, it really was helpful the comments.

Maybe someone can help me a bit out with my additional concerns:

a) Are there maybe any useful constructs (phrases) that non-native speakers
could use in an attempt to survive the viva and answer the questions.

b) I am doing engineering. Is here wearing a suite with tie overdressed or should that
be alright?

c) My supervisor told me to NOT prepare any slides for the VIVA. I should think about 10 minute
introduction for the motivation of the work and summarize the main contributions. In this way it
looks more as if I am unprepared if I am asked for a summary. Do people think that is good
advice?

Thanks for your inputs.

Thanks, that are some useful links. I have a couple of more questions:

Public-pay freeze
P

Hi all,

I am now 4 months into my postdoc and have still 3 more years left. Now I am wondering how this works with the public pay freeze. I assume we as postdocs are also affected by this change. Or are we somewhat an exemption as our money has already been allocated for us in the months before this announcement. Further, my salary has been inflation-linked, will this remain in the future or is this also a thing of the past.

Thanks for your help

When to submit?
P

Hi,

I have planned to graduate next summer. More precisely, the graduation will be hold from 9.July to 16.July.
I am wondering, if submitting end of March gives me enough time to be part of the summer graduation? Anyone
an idea when would be the latest time I could have the viva?

Thanks

Summer Placement & Grant
P

thanks for your feedback katq.

well I have 8 weeks of holiday a year... I just wonder if its possible in someway to make a "break" for 3 months and get then the money for these 3 months at the end. I am sure that I will require around 3.5 years until i have finished... Anyone done it this way? I dont wanna risk the studentship!

Summer Placement & Grant
P

Hi

I am thinking of doing a summer placement at a company and working on a project that is related to my research. So I wonder if there is going to be any problem with the grant? I have a EPRSC grant, and I will also be paid for the 10 weeks at the company. Will the grant money during the time stopped? If yes, will I get it in the end if the PhD takes me longer?

Cheers

EPSRC studentship also for EU students?
P

Hi

Two short questions: I was nomitated for a PHD with a EPSRC studentship. But I am not a UK resident, I am living in Germany. Am I still eligible for this studentship or is that only for UK citizens? I addition, is the tuition fee also payed by EPSRC or do I have have to pay it from my own, hard earned money ;)

Thanks for useful comments,
Patrick

PhD Income after taxes
P

So in other words i can pay the 11% for the national insurance so that I can get treatment from a doctor? But I dont have to pay the 22% income tax? That would be great ;)

PhD Income after taxes

Hi everyone

I was so lucky to get a PhD stipend. Every year I receive the amount of 12300 pounds. Currently I am planning my finances, so I need to know how much money I have available each month. Can somebody tell me how much taxes and insurance I have to pay from this amount of money? How much money do i effectivly have to spend each month.

Thanks for helping me with this issue
