Quote From keenbean:

Hey! This is quite common for a masters degree- mine was the same. It wasn't a problem for me, I went on to do a PhD at the the same university just a week after I handed my MSc dissertation in and several months before I knew my final result, although I had all my exam marks by then. Quite a few people I know did this, but this might be because I stayed on at the same place and so they already knew what my result would most likely be etc. I'm not sure how it would work if you went elsewhere to do your PhD but I would be surprised if it caused a problem because so many people go straight from MSc to PhD. I guess you could ask at the universities you are hoping to apply for a PhD at and see what they say? KB

Turns out the university I have been offered a place at are looking for me to start a couple of days after my MSc thesis hand in. No need for me to wait on my results after all! Woohoo!

Advice / Hints / Tips!
R

Hi guys!

Well, its happened. After having my first PhD interview, I have been offered a place studying for a PhD. I never in a million years expected it but im so happy and thrilled to be offered a place. I was just looking for some advice / hints or tips any of you guys have about doing a PhD? I mean obviously I have done a lot of research into doing a PhD but are there any things you never expected to happen that have happened and so on?

Also, do any of you have advice on working from home? All through my undergrad and masters I have really enjoyed working from home and I have done quite well out it, but im not sure how much different it would be doing a PhD? Are supervisors strict about the time you should be in the office or are they fairly flexible?

One last question, i promise! How long has it taken you guys to do your PhD / how long do you expect it will take you? Anyone done it in less than 3 years?

Cheers guys, appreciate any help you can give me!

Questions to Ask At an Interview
R

Hi Guys,

So im very excited, Ive been offered an interview for a PhD on Tuesday. I was wondering if any of you had any ideas of questions I can ask at the interview at the end? I always feel like I should ask a question to show I have thought about the PhD in detail. Any ideas??

European Funding
R

Hi Guys,

Just a quick question. I have been offered the opportunity of a PhD in Belgium subject to gaining funding from European funds. The lecturer involved has told me to look for financial support provided by European funds which he will then pursue through his colleagues in Belgium. I guess I am basically asking if anyone knows of any financial assistance available in Europe? I am a UK resident.

Best wishes

Rob

We had our introduction to our MSc Sport Psychology on Tuesday just passed. All the people on our course were assuming that we would graduate next summer. However, it turns out we dont hand our dissertation in till August next year, the exam board meets in December 2010 and we graduate the summer of 2011! I was looking to do a PhD, does this mean I have to wait until the summer of 2011 to get into a PhD. Also, am I allowed to say I have a masters or not? This really confused me because I dont want to waste a year doing nothing, when I want to be doing a PhD. Any help greatly appreciated :)

Help! Can't decide between two studentships
R

I think you have to do it in a place you like so I would chose option A. The reason I say this is because the chances of you completing a PhD in a place you dont like are slim. If possible, visit the universities and try to find out a bit more about them

When to contact a potential supervisor?
R

I was wondering if anyone could give any advice about when to contact a potential supervisor. I was going to start contacting those who could be potential supervisors next month. Is this too early when I am looking to start doing my PhD next July/August/September time? I dont want to miss the boat and with funding etc taking a while to sort out, I am trying to be prepared as possible.

Any help greatly appreciated :)

Are you guarenteed entry to the university if you find a supervisor?
R

As the title thread suggests, are you guarenteed entry to a university if you manage to find a supervisor. I know with most places you still have to apply through the official university applications but is your application looked on more favourably if you have a supervisor?
