Thanks everyone!
Well done Sneaks! It is great that you managed to find something close by too! Maybe there are dog walking services who could come and take the dog out during the day?
Thanks guys! I hope the cat will be OK with it actually, we usually spend our days together but I'm going to be away from home quite a bit. I'm very fortunate though as the University is only 20 miles away. I'd been applying to places all over and was preparing to have to move out of the area. A combination of hard work and the right opportunity coming up at the right time I think!
Hi everyone,
I submitted my thesis last week and I'd like to say thank you to everyone for helping me get through the last couple of years. Particularly the regulars on the one goal thread!
I ended up taking a hiatus from the forum as the day after I submitted I got invited to an interview for a lectureship. Cue many sleepless nights and a lot of stress as I spent as much time as I could preparing a presentation for them.
Anyway, I ended up being offered the job! I really can't believe my luck.
I spent a lot of time during my PhD thinking I'd never be able to write the thesis, and even more time thinking that I'd never be capable as working as a lecturer. If I can do it, anyone can!
Today I am... printing off my thesis and handing it in for binding! I'm anticipating problems with the printing of some of my data extracts and the volume of stuff I'm printing but hopefully it'll all go smoothly.
Good luck with the interview next week Sneaks!
I now have all of the main stuff in one document and am happy with my references, formatting, etc. My next goal is to sort out the appendices and cover page.
Good luck Sneaks, I hope you manage to get a good chunk done over the next couple of days.
Today I need to finish everything off so that I can print and hand in for binding tomorrow. I'm struggling a bit because I had a bad night- ended up getting up at 4.30 to do a couple of hours work before my driving lesson because I was wide awake and want to be done today.
My first goal is to put everything into one document and make sure format of headings are consistent, etc, etc.
I have now written out the 'additional information' section for my job application. It didn't take me too long (I got distracted with some other stuff), I'd like to say I'm getting 'good' at job applications, but 'efficient' might be more accurate. My next goal is to proof read my final data chapter.
Yep, the end is very near! I'm trying not to let myself get stressed out about this form my supervisor needs to sign (I emailed him about something last week and he didn't reply. He does sometimes just forget to reply to emails so I'm sure he's around but I'm imagining him being out of contact for stupid amounts of time!). I think I'm just finding everything quite stressful at the moment!
The proof reading is going well, anyway. But now I need to start working on a job application which is due on wednesday.
Sounds like you are organised- enjoy your weekend off! I'm also taking the weekend off as we have people visiting.
Well I just spoke to the research student office and found out there is a form my supervisor needs to sign which has to go in the thesis! Hopefully he can sign it, scan and email to me because I'm not sure if he's around and I'm hoping to hand it in for binding on Wednesday.
My next goal today is to finish proof reading a very, very long data chapter.
Morning everyone.
My first goal today is to quickly track down the 'certificate of originality' I need to put into my thesis (hopefully will be online) and then to add a paper which I have decided really needs to go into my literature review.
Oh I hope the visit to the hospital isn't too much of a pain.
I have now found all of the missing bits of information. My goal after lunch is to generate my bibliography and make sure everything looks as it should.
I guess I'm just used to it Skig! Ny OH is another one who can't live without a car. No exaggeration- I think there are literally about 5 times he has actually walked to places since we moved here 3 years ago and I can remember each time because it's so unusual. He's terrible.
My first goal today was to go to the gym and be back and showered in time before the plumber arrived at 9.30, which is done.
The rest of the day I'm going to be arguing with Refworks, generating my bibliography and chasing up any little bits of info which are missing.
Thank you! It's about time I learned how to drive- I've been putting it off for the last 3 years. Glad that your day is going well and that you're getting lots done.
I have got half way through proof reading my first data chapter. I'm absolutely exhausted and am finding it hard to focus. No point in proof reading if I am likely to be missing things. I'll leave it for now and will fill out the easy bits of 2 application forms (leaving the 'additional information' sections for when I'm less tired!).
Afternoon everyone. I've had such a busy morning- I took (and passed) my driving theory test, and had to get up at 5.50 to cycle and then get the train to the nearest test center for my 9am appointment (that'll teach me to not be able to drive!). I have also been into uni and have done several bits of admin type stuff.
My first goal today is to try and find out a piece of info which I'm missing and then to proof read and make any changes to at least 2 of my data chapters.
Ady- I found writing the abstract OK. I might come back to it though because it's a bit short- 230 words.
Sneaks- you will get there. Your supervisor does sound like a bit of a nightmare though!
I have now sorted out my data extracts. I thought it'd take me ages but it was fine. It is starting to feel like I'm close to the end now, just really proof reading, some arguing with refworks and any other admin such as the contents page to go!
