Hiding from supervisor
A

Ha ha, so have I for the last 2 years. On the other hand if she's not after me I'm invisible. I have to jump out of the way because she attemts to walk right through me. Or try to dodge the door she's slamming into my face. Ha ha

academic expectations for our children: pushy parents?
A

Hi Rolinski,

just a few coments/remarks:

a) You would actually want your child to learn German?? Wow, I mean- that would put you in my good books- but isn't learning German pretty uncool??

b) Your child would want a gap year to work for the UN. By the way- if you want language skills you should send little Rolli to an interbational school in Geneve. They teach different subjects in different languages from day one.

c) If you don't want children that's fine, but try not to end up with a little pooch- "aw, show Daddy the hurt on your little paw, cutie"

d) If you would be better in Maths you might be able to believe in God

***Full or Part Time Study***

We have two part time PhD students/lab technicians in our building. One is doing a normal PhD - she's not doing any work other that her PhD work (which happens to be the same as her technician's job). She gets paid more and is paying into her pention. For it she has less holidays. She has finished in the lab after 3,5 years and is now writing up- also on the technician salary full time.
The other is doing two jobs at once- her PhD and tissue culture work, and is struggeling and always seems tired. Because there is so much to do for her techie job she's struggeling to get enough done for the PhD. For our supervisor her technician work is more important- as she has six years to complete the PhD.

SO- if you do a part time PhD make sure you discuss with your supervisor exactly how the work/work balance will be.

Calling all International Students

Hi Kitten,

I haven't encountered any problems withe the university, that were caused by being an EU student (besides the fact that they always misspell my name thanks to an Umlaut in it).

Problems were: opening a bank account (still haven't got an overdraft), finding a gurantor to be able to rent a room.

Jury service - what to do?

If you can't get out of it you can constantly make references to CSI miami- like, "Uh, well in CSI they would have found DNA evidence to prove that the crime was comitted by a cross-dressing man wearing make up, so I really can't understand why they didn't find any in this case. Like, if this was CSI I'd demand that you re-run all the samples again".

Then they'll through you out in no time.

How flexible are they?

How far in are you into your PhD? What field are you in? Do you get on well with your supervisor? Are there any other projects you could switch to/ do in paralel, that might not be so interesting but could get you more data?
If your data is not significant you will have a lot lot more to write about in your thesis, believe me!

As it's getting autum you could do this with leaves, to explain why leaves change colour in autum. Here's a useful link, although it's essencially what Anne said:

I was also asked to do this project two years ago and decided ageainst it. I didn't feel that it is a good idea to tell people to go into science.

any science phd students help me out??

That last formular should be:

c1 * v1 = c2 * v2 , or v2 = (c1 * v1)/ c2

... just to make it clearer.

This would seem to be the perfect time to make a "before" picture of your self! If you take the picture with a slightly bewildered expression on your face, you'll seem especially wise on the "after" the PhD pictures!

Congratulations
