Scruffy...forever?
F

I was told when you start to dress like your supervisor to panic...this was followed by a supervisory meeting both of us in jeans, baggy t-shirt and big boots (managed to stay calm and have avoided the same mistake since then). We all dressed up for our department meal, and made the rest of the staff look the scruffy ones!

Applied for a PhD but worried....
F

Tricky one. Is there anyway you could make you masters thesis fall between the two? So you can the time issue is not one?

DOING A SECOND MASTERS - PROBLEM
F

Hi I did two masters before my PhD, and I think keep it in and you can explain if necessary but generally as long as you have two goods referees for aplying you should be ok. Good luck x

Sport Science Masters with Nutrition

Hi Why not contact the Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register: http://www.senr.org.uk (who seem like the professional body in this area), and ask what courses they recommend. A google found the following:

Hope that's a start.

PhD - Which uni?
F

Pharmacy from those that I know who studied it at undergrad is a big topic. What aspects of it appeal, as the place for me was not important but the project. Maybe even look at journals written by people your interested in working with. When I was more chemistry than I am now, I knew for instance it was environmental chemistry that appealed (I am now an environmental archaeologist), so maybe rather than being bogged down on the uni look at which has people in your field. Then look at the RAE for an idea of how good the research is at the university. I would not have thought of doing a PhD in Loughborough, but the project is good as is the department.

Quote From Smilodon:

I'm interdisciplinary with a limit of 80,000. I have 35,000 so far in 9 chapters and hope to stretch out to 50,000. My supervisor agrees that will be enough. Right now I can't really see where the extra words will come from but I'll just keep going and have faith....

I have found discussing it with people who either slightly know about my field (as noone in my department fully does) or don't know anything can help by discussing what your trying to do and say, they can help you think of things you may not have thought of, sometimes supervisors are too close...so my director of research is useful in this case. Interdisciplinary has its ups and downs, as I do mine in a geography department, and no I am not a geographer! You will get there, best of luck :-)

I am constantly told its only a PhD. The word count is a guide but not set in stone, my supervisor's (who is in her late 50s is 27000) and a guy I hope to have as my internal completed 4 years ago at 22000 for a science based PhD. I have written two chapters fully which equate to 12500, but my first will need changes. So write what you can and see you go, my original idea for chapter two was only 3500, but recently added a section and is now nearly 6000.

Update on DanB
F

Having just spoken to Dan, I thought I'd see if his legend status here was still apparent. Not been about myself for over a year! Hope you all do well in 2009, I am trying to finish lab work and write up!

Urban History Anybody?
F

Depends what aspect, as I am in a geography department, and some aspects of your topic come under human geography.

F

Passed my upgrade, no academic reason why not! I just had to narrow down my aim, and think more about my research questions.
