To be honest I think its good to have someone like Jouri on here, adding the 'other side of the coin'. For example, I tend to LOL when I read things like 'if you keep trying you'll get there" and the like from the more 'optimistic' members of the forum (if only it were that easy). Jouri provides some much needed realism in this respect, and accordingly I hope will keep posting.
I don't know about cynical...I would have thought practical. I'm just wondering how 2 kids plus a partner (that isn't working?) and another adult divides into a student bursary in today's UK. I would have thought along with everything else (on your list), it involved some degree of turning water into wine.

Before you start doing 4-5000 words find out whether what he wants is the above (the long version), or the short version. In my experience, when submitting a proposal for consideration all most potential supervisors / research coordinators want is (quite literally) a couple of side of A4.
