I think it best to address the problem and take appropriate action rather than sit on it and wait for it to get worse. PhD's aren't for everyone, and sometimes other issues and politics get in the way. I think it's brave to make the decision that is right for you - better than suffering for 3 years (assuming it really isn't going well) Life's too short.

i would say it's worth an application. If nothing else, if you get an interview it'll be good experience. You can make a final decision if you are offered it, but it sounds like it has some really good positives, and it won't hurt to apply. You can always pull out if the other PhD comes through. GOod luck
i found the lovely bones very disturbing. It's compelling and impossible to put down but so upsetting and sad. I think particularly when you think about the fact that it's based loosly on the author's experiences. I've also read her other on "Lucky" and find it even worse, with regard to the subject matter, prehaps that is because it a true story. So not one for a bit of light reading!
