I'm not Delta, but thought I should comment as I was also one of the unemployed lot when this thread started.

Well, after working for my PhD sup unpaid for several months, he's given me a job for 6 months. This is my 3rd week :-)

Umm... I can't imagine that you would be entitled to it because you're not an employee (I'm presuming you're doing a full-time PhD).

Your studentship might have a provision for maternity pay while it's still active, though. I could be wrong about all of this though :p

I'm unemployed as well - but I haven't claimed anything because I'm not entitled to anything (have a partner who works, and no NI contributions...) :$. However, it doesn't stop the mother in law from going on about it constantly :p

Umm.. no. I couldn't get on with Cite while you write (and didn't have Ref manager on my home computer anyway...). The refs that I had in the text I inserted manually, and I just used reference manager to generate a bibiliography. Then I just saved that as a PDF...

I panicked a bit for you there ;-)

If it helps - I wrote mine up as seperate chapters. When they were done I coverted them to PDF, and then merged the PDFs together. It saved me from having to deal with 100s of pages in one Word document :-)

Maybe you could do some electrophysiology on it :-)

I think unis are just really slow. I had my viva right at the beginning of November, and submitted my corrected copies sometime in December. The letter telling me I'd passed didn't arrive until February... :-)

I think she should take it - the academic job market is rubbish, and opportunities are hard to come by. I've applied for quite a few RA jobs too, and if I had been offered one I would definitely have taken it :-)

I don't think you have anything to worry about - it sounds like they have chosed that option because it will give you more time, so that you are not rushing around trying to get corrections approved once you've done them.

My uni has a minor deficiencies option - where you get 12 weeks to do the corrections. That was the outcome of my viva - and I was told that there was no way that they would take 12 weeks to do. My supervisor also pointed out that it was better to get the 12 week corrections than the 4 weeks one, as you can struggle to get everything done in time.

I really think you shouldn't be upset about it - just do the corrections, if they take you 3 weeks or 3 months - you'll have your PhD once they're done! :-)
