Tax and sponsorship for MSc
Avatar for AndyP

I'm not sure how sponsorship paid directly to you would be treated by the inland revenue, by the sound of things neither are they. If your sponsoring organisation makes the award direct to your university this should at least take the fees part of the award out of taxation. The university research office should be able to help you find the best way to deal with this.

How many objective is needed if you're doing a phd??
Avatar for AndyP

How many research questions you set will depend on the nature of the research you are doing. If your objectives can be summed up by just one or two questions then this is probably the best approach. Have a look at the article on writing a PhD research proposal on FindAPhD for more guidance.

thinking of a PhD

Hi Liamdobro

It sounds like you're taking the right approach and talking to current doctoral students will certainly help you get a better idea of what you're letting yourself in for. There's plenty of advice and guidance about doing a PhD on FindAPhD, which I hope will be useful to you. You can also search for PhD opportunities in history there as well.

Good luck.

I'm looking for a phd in Bioethics/intellectual property/policy

Hi Tygrelilly

You can get some guidance on writing a PhD proposal in the PhD Study section of FindAPhD. You'll also be able to search for PhDs in Bioethics and PhDs in intellectual property.

Funding for international students to study a PhD in the UK is hard to come by and the most likely source of funding will be through your own department of education. However international scholarships do exist. Projects with possible (if not full) funding for international students are marked on FindAPhD with a world icon.

To continue with PhD or not!!

Hazyjane is right.  Universities are assessed on PhD completion rates and yours will not want you to drop out now.  Of course if you submit for a masters instead they'll probably be able to hide you in the figures somewhere as you completed a degree, even if it wasn't a PhD. Completion rates are the reason behind the MPhil/PhD system.  If someone isn't upgraded to a PhD and has to submit for an MPhil they haven't failed or dropped out of the PhD, instead they have completed the MPhil they registered for in the first place.

Whilst raising £20000 is a very big ask there are sources of smaller grants that can build up to make a substantial contribution to your funds.  See our article on funding PhD study without a scholarship on FindAPhD. There are numerous charities and trusts that have funds available for education.  The fact that you are nearing the end of your PhD will make you more attractive to many of these bodies as they will be able to see that their £500 or £1000 award can make a real difference to your chances of completing your studies.

Good luck with finishing your PhD.

It depends on your situation. Are you an EU student or from outside the EU? Do you have your own funding available?

You can search for Engineering PhDs on FindAPhD.

I would think it unlikely that it would be feasible to do a part time PhD whilst also studying medicine. The are advantages to doing a PhD after you have qualified that aren't available to other PhD students. Generally speaking clinicians can continue to receive a their full salary whilst pursuing their research. Whilst they are expected to continue to carry out clinical duties during this time they often have the use of a research assistant/technician to carry out experimental work under their direction - something that most PhD students can only dream of.

Hi Aqualung

I can see your dilemma and it may be worth approaching the supervisor for a bit of clarification - ie ask does he have a particular range of antibiotics in mind or are you free to choose.  You may also found helpful our article on writing a good phd proposal on FindAPhD.

Good luck

Is it still not too late to apply for MBAs?
Avatar for AndyP

Hi Dima2011

Most MBA Programmes want students to have at least a couple of post degree business experience, so applying now would probably not be worthwhile. It shouldn't stop you looking around to see what the entrance criteria are though. Have a look at FindAnMBA to view MBA Programmes in your area of interest. You could always apply for an MSc or MA in Business instead.
