One you just can't put down ;)

Where were you in your academic career when you first got published?
H

Medical sciences: Just started my PhD and have a paper that's just gone off to be published, data was from my undergraduate research project.

How many applications
H

I wouldn't recommend spreading yourself too thin. I waited for the right PhD to come up and then put my all my effort into getting it. I was also asked at interview if I had made any other applications.

How do I know which are the better research groups?
H

As you get into the literature, you should begin to get a feel for who are the main players in the field, based on what has been published and the 'impact factor' of their papers.

Applying for a PhD - but no journal access 8(
H

I emailed my supervisor when I was applying and asked him to send me the PDFs, which he did, no problem :)

Thumbs up for Selly Oak /Studentville also, it must house some of the best balti houses in the UK!! :P

Is not answering the email stupid...?
H

You could reply to the email and say you're ill, use that time to catch up and then she can't accuse you of ignoring her!

Christian courtship during PhD away from home
H

Wow, that sounds rather strict to me, obviously Christians in the UK play it a bit differently!
But if this girl browses this forum isn't she going to know that you're talking about her, I can't imagine there are too many people who fit that bill!?!

Here's a vote for the goose fat :)

Pregnant in interview
H

I'd make a point of bringing it up at interview, explain that it didn't affect your studies before and it won't this time round either. Better than them making assumptions!

Question for Huntie
H

Sorry Matthew, just spotted this, refer to the original post! :)

The City of Birmingham

Hey Matthew, just a good guess, he really is a big name in that dept, always has press interviews when his research is published. He's very motivated by his research, guessing he will make an excellent supervisor (if you get the funding).

Pea, I've always found the restaurants and bars to the rear of the Mailbox to be fantastic, then there's the canalside and Brindleyplace. The Raddison restaurant (Beetham tower)is fantastic but a bit pricey.
As for clubs, I'm only really familiar with the gay quarter, but the new oceania is supposed to be good, and every1 reaves about the custard factory in Digbeth.

I have a hangover ...
H

If you have an oxygen cylinder in your lab, it works wonders!!!

Christmas tunes - love them or hate them?
H

I've been listening to Mariah Carey's xmas album, bit old now but still, she has a fab voice :)
