Also, Eppi, thanks so much for the extensive research. It is much appreciated!

I am only not keeping my name (for work at least) because I earned my doctorate in my name. I would feel somehow cheated if I transferred all my hard work to my OH's name, partcularly as his family have nevr quite got the whole PhD thing. Also, I have a decent number of publications in my maiden name, so I don't think it would be a good idea. I also actually prefer me name. I am toying with the idea of being Mrs spikemonster at home and being dr fluffymonster at work, therefore keepnig everyone happy. I am still not convinced that would work though, I am sure I would end up being confused!

Cheers Pea and Kronkodile for your posts. I was discussing this with friends as we all realised that this will be an issue for us. I don't intend to change my name for work for this reason (and also publication) but it does make me think. I just an nosey and wondered if it was even possible to transfer a Dr title. I think my OH's family were not too amused to find that I was not becoming Mrs Spikeymonster. Oh dear.

I agree with your last point K, I do think there must be circumstances where it can be sorted for reasons such as those that you mention.

Thanks Ann, I appreciate your opinion as always. I am glad that I am not the only person to think this is true.

I got it!

Brilliant news, well done.

I have always been that convinced that once you have a PhD, you cannot transfer your Dr title if you get married. E.g, As Miss X, I became Dr X, but I could not be Dr Y (assuming that Y is my husband's name). Is this true? I have no idea who told me this and I can't find anything concrete to say whether this is just an urban myth type thing or whether there is any truth in that. I realise that there are lots of other issues relating to publication history etc but I am intrigued as to whether I am spouting rubbish about the name thing or not!!! Having got the Dr title, there is no way that I am losing it!

viva stories... good and bad

They pointed out stuff all the way wrong (as part of the discussion) but I had no idea of the outcome until after the private discussion. I do know of people who have been told the outcome at the start of the viva but that is totally against the rules!

Mine was a very similar experience to Kronkondile's to be honest. It was 2 1/2 hours long, but the time did fly by. I never believed people when they said it would but it honestly did.

The external also did much more of the talking than the internal. Again, mine started out generally and then became more specific. The first question was about how I chose the topic, started working in the area.

The examiners went through the thesis chronologically. No one bothered with the intro/lit review chapter but commented on all the other chapters. There was only one question about the last discussion chapter (more of a comment really) which surprised me. I expected lots on this to be honest.

I made some notes whilst talking and I am glad I did as it took a while for the list of corrections to come through (Easter hols) so at least I could go ahead and make changes.

What shall i do ?

Hi

I would explain the situation to your supervisor. I don't think it is reasonable to expect someone to drop everything at the last minute and lose money on an already paid holiday. Is it a poster or a actual presentation? If it is a poster I would just withdraw it personally.

Good luck.

Journal Reviews - i dont undersand.

I am guessing your paper was not rejected at this round from what you are saying. If your sups are also authors then I would forward the email onto them at this point so that they know how things are moving on. Just my opinion though.

Congrats by the way, it sounds as if the competition was tough. Good luck for the next round.

I need some new hobbies...any ideas?

404, that is exactly what I plan to do now. I want to try some evening classes. I am having trouble understanding that I no longer need to work all weekend and bank holidays, so don't know what to do with my time. I think I am going to try something fun and random!
