accepting a PhD then turning it down months later
R

I started on October and my supervisors are well aware I am not happy, but seem quite happy for me to leave. I was told my supervisor would write references whilst I am deciding what to do. Given I have insulted my supervisors and department and am not fulfilling their expectations, I think they would be quite pleased to see the back of me. As for impact for the future, I don't think it matters since I will not be pursuing a PhD again. All that makes me a little sad is that I promised at my interview not to turn around months later and start looking for jobs, as I am doing. I am sure they realise it is for the best though.

Ways to annoy your supervisor

I'm loving endnote so much...
R

I don't like it - it doesn't work with OpenOffice It supports RTF, but that looses so much information - why can't it use OpenDocument?

Ways to annoy your supervisor

See http://canberra.lti.cs.cmu.edu/cgi-bin/99ways/99ways.pl?id=1 for some starters. I am thinking of something that allows me to get my own back, isn't too obvious and doesn't get me kicked off the course.

Help! I'm only 3 weeks in and I hate it and feel like quitting

I feel like quiting too...I keep looking for a suitable job, but until I find one, I won't quit

National Insurance Shortfall
R

Yes, I am short as well - I get reminders every so often. What bugs me is that I had a part-time job all through undergraduate university (16-20 hours a week) but still I didn't contribute enough. And full-time students do not get it paid on their behalf.

Jury service - what to do?
R

Grrr - I have just been called up for jury service and would be interested how others have dealt with this unfortunate happening. Does your studentship funding stop and can you get it back from the crown? Any ways of getting out of it?

Any advice for those of us who are starting in September?
R

as am I, though I am continuing on from other study...and I suspect my university / dept. / supervisor are near the worst in the country I am just too lazy to move

But at least you have some freedom in a PhD to do what you want regardless of what your supervisor says - yes you need to meet certain milestones, but otherwise your life is your own. The way I like it.

Wednesday's particularly question - supervisors
R

Indeed, how do you deal with a over-controlling and won't-listen-to-reason supervisor?
